Antidepressants and Birth Defects

Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI’s) antidepressants were introduced in the late 1980's and since that time have dominated the market as the drugs of choice used to treat a wide variety of symptoms of depression. Despite some theories of thought doubting the effectiveness of these drugs, use of these medications have increased substantially over the years. The majority of those who ingest the medications are women of child bearing age, which leads to as many as 1 out of 8 women ingesting these medications while pregnant. Over the last ten years, studies have identified a significant risk of birth defects when embryos are exposed to these medications during the first trimester. Injuries include major heart defects, gastroschisis, omphalocele, and several other facial and neural tube defects. Lawsuits have been filed against the makers of Paxil, Lexapro, Celexa, Zoloft, and others and are currently being litigated throughout the country.
